So how did Gastown Get it’s Name?
Gastown was named after “Gassy” Jack Deighton, a saloon keeper who opened the area’s first pub in the late 1860s. “Gassy” Jack Deighton was a charismatic sailor and saloon keeper who arrived in Vancouver in 1867. He is credited with being one of the founding fathers of the city and is remembered for his colorful personality and legendary storytelling ability. Jack opened the city’s first pub, The Globe Saloon, which became the center of social and economic activity in the fledgling community and helped to establish Gastown as the city’s first downtown neighborhood. Soon other pubs and places to eat and drink popped up as Gastown grew in popularity.
The Fire that burned gastown down!
Yes, there was a fire in Gastown in 1886 which destroyed much of the neighborhood. However, the area was quickly rebuilt and many of the buildings that remain today date from the rebuilding effort. The fire is considered a pivotal moment in the city’s history as it led to the creation of a modern firefighting system and helped to establish Vancouver as a city with a bright future.
Fires back in those days could spred rapidly and out of control due to the fact that it was mostly wood construction and the fact that there was no real fire department to handle such large fires. So after the fire, Gastown was rebuilt with brick and stone buildings to replace the wooden structures that were destroyed. This was part of a broader effort to modernize the city and improve its infrastructure in the wake of the fire. New building codes were also established to ensure that future construction was safer and more resistant to fire. The rebuilding effort attracted new businesses and residents to the area, helping to establish Gastown as a thriving commercial and cultural hub.
